When armies rode horses instead of jeeps, they needed a special gate to get out of their
walled cities. Those gates were called "salleyports," for salleying forth, yes?,
as in the one in Mycenae about 3,000 years ago. In 1912 Houston got its salleyport, when
Rice University built its administration building.
