Apocalypse Whenever
A Few Crackpot Words on the Possible Cause Behind Errant Drivers, Greedy Capitalists, and Dumb Politicians, Expedient Priests and Preachers

Perhaps…
our unusually virulent stubbornness
(the powerful clinging violently to their powers,
the rich clinging stingily to their riches.
the smart cling snobbily to their smarts,
the religionists clinging blindly to their religions)
comes from—could it be—a dimly shared precognition,
a faint but terrifying sensing that
we’re about to lost it all, all,
bigtime (way bigger than anything in
our vaunted recorded histories),
when Gaia wakes sweating one day soon and
without a by-your-leave
rather radically resets the thermostat.

Goodbye, powers. Goodbye, riches.
Goodbye, smarts. Goodbye, religions…
along with, oh, say, five billion or so of us.
"Some earth mother!" we’ll scream.
"What’d we do wrong?"
No wonder we’ve lately become
such obstinately rapine robots,
if we 1) see what’s coming,
and 2) have to work really hard
at pretending we don’t,
while 3) keeping our vanity’s
ancient disguise as morality
in good shape.
What price humility?
We’re about to find out.
