"Giving well is the best revenge."
--Douglas Milburn.

In this age of hyperbolic mediocrity,
it's harder and harder to remember that true excellence is possible. We've got a candidate for you, in the person of a
20-year-old Dutch-Russian pianist.

The 10
11 12 13 14 15 Best
Things to Do in America (and the 10 Worst Also)
Ceci Lumley avoids the tourist magnets and lists her favorite places to go and
experiences to have (along with 10 things to miss). The reader should understand, for Ceci
the ideal traveller is 1)
sensitive, and 2) uninhibited.

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not
enough to make us love.
--Jonathan
Swift.

Blue Red
Three wee sentences to help with
today's synaptic re-wiring... You're welcome.

Zen Centerfold 96
Tyrants keep on tyranting, the greedy keep on greedying, the violent keep on
violenting, and, wtf, here we go again into
the tame blue yonder... (Slideshow with midi [3:59]).

Headlights in the Darkness
Our automotive editor drags out his old crystal ball, takes a look, and
finds (ready?) hope. Not once, but twice.

See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things
over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.
--George W. Bush, May 24, 2005.

Languages & Landscapes
Horticulture editor has been reading Chomsky. Or maybe not. Something has caused her to wax, um,
poetic.

The Other F-word
Of course it can't happen here (f - scism, we mean), but just to be sure we've devised a little test to help you check up on
our leaders.

Karl Rove, Machiavelli, and Me
Doc Cuddy ponders the sea of troubles around Karl Rove and predicts what Boy Genius has in store for us.

Magellan's Log Books & CDs
"Giving well is the best
revenge."
Gifts for yourself, and for any of your friends who are still awake and
thinking. All drawn from the sometimes boistrous, sometimes beautiful pages of Magellan's
Log. Click here for more info.

To be stupid, selfish and have good health
are the three requirements of happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost.
--Gustave
Flaubert.

Super-insanities
The staff has been slaving over a hot
Internet again, collecting yet more examples of human behavior and misbehavior. Enter at your own risk.

Constitutional Amendments
Now that Texas has banned gay marriage, our civic-minded staff has
come up with a list of future
constitutional amendments to further improve the quality of life in the direction of
The Founders' original intent. The non-Texan reader will not that these amendments can be
easily adapted to other states.

American
Tragedy: The Hubris of King George. Doc Cuddy looks to the ancient Greeks for
help in understanding the present mess. His conclusion? Act III is upon us and what at times has looked like a comedy is headed
toward tragedy.

Religion is dogmatic. Politics is ideological. Reason
must be logical. But literature has the privilege of being equivocal. The quality of doubt
in a novel is perhaps a manner of telling us that since authorship (and thus authority)
are uncertain and susceptible of many explanations, so it goes with the world itself.
--Carlos Fuentes, Speech at the Berlin Literature Festival, Sept. 6, 2005.

What, Me Wise???
Henry Bob Kulup puts his finger on the fatal flaw (unbridled power) that
brought Marxism to its knees and then turns to the
fatal flaw (unbridled greed) now plaguing global capitalism.

Hollow Homeland
Douglas Milburn ponders history and the Bush administration's idea of
"homeland", and laments the New
Orleans speech that was never given.

How Dysfunctional Is Your Country?
As yet another of our contributions to global understanding and improvement, the
staff has come up with ten statements, a
sort of quickie checklist to see how the old homeland is doing, functionality-wise.
