Reading-readiness
for Grown-ups
by Astraeu Chakra
How we love a good story! So much so that, given a series of events, we jump at the
chance to somehow string them together into a coherent narrative.
Why it almost seems that, as the tiger attacks and eats instinctively, we have
a similar need, compulsion, and ability to impose narrative just about everywhere we look:
"A" happened, and then "B" happened. It's not only obvious to me or
you or any other observer that "A" resulted in "B", but if you'll just
give us a little time, we can quickly figure out "C", that is, what will happen
next. Sometimes when we're given only "A", we'll go to quite a bit of trouble
concocting a pre-"A" story to account for "A" even though we have no
idea at all about what events really occurred before "A" happened.
In these days of media overload, where stories are handed ready-made to us, maybe we're
getting a bit rusty, narrative-wise. As ever, when Magellan's Log identifies a
cultural problem, we're ready with a cultural solution.
What we've come up with this time is ten little exercises to get the creaks out
of the old story-telling machinery. Each exercise consists of three pictures:
something happens, something else happens, and the third picture is a big question mark. All
you have to do is look at the two pictures where something happens and then decide what
happens in the question mark frame.
Simple, huh?
It gets better. There are no right or wrong answers. We're providing a FREE public
service for your mind. Sort of as if your local gym opened it doors and said, come on in,
the work-out's on us!
