Don't be put off by the wry,
if graying, winsomeness. It's still the same old strutting cock-of-the-walk Norman Mailer,
the old prose popinjay himself, who gave us lines like:
"I respect most boxers because
they're violent people who learned to discipline themselves ... a good boxer is an artist
... Boxing is existential."
And:
"I think the internet is the
greatest waste of time since masturbation was discovered."
If the Deity has the same whimsical sense of
humor in the afterlife which is so apparent on earth, surely we will get to observe
Mailer, Camille Paglia, and Joyce Carol Oates thrown together as a heavenly ménage à
trois for all eternity. They truly deserve to get to know each other better. A lot
better.
