11. My House Being Now at Rest
After San Juan de la Cruz, translated by E. Allison Peers
Words & Music © 1997 by C.K. Latham
1. On a darkly
blinding night,
free to find my ancient freedom,
a new fire shining white deep within my breast,
unseen, unheard, at last I set forth,
my house being now at rest.
2. In darkness and secure,
a cloak upon my body,
with grace alone to aid my quest,
down the secret ladder in silence I did flee,
my house being now at rest.
3. O glorious concealing night,
accepting mother of all,
alone, no light, no guide's behest,
except the burning deep within my heart,
my house being now at rest.
4. My heart shone brighter far
than any sun at noon,
leading me to that friend who is thrice blest,
always waiting, for me, for me alone,
my house being now at rest.
5. O night that led me back
to a place beyond these games,
more welcome than any old-world dawn,
and joined me with my fair brother,
in Eden where we belong.
6. Upon his flowery breast
I slept and stayed without fear,
his resting breath my only song,
my hand, his cradling pillow,
in Eden where we belong.
7. Nature sighed and showed her
face
as I drew his hair away.
His hand then banished our fathers' wrong
by drawing me fainting to his heart,
in Eden where we belong.
8. Thus freed from times
chains,
in perfect repose I kissed him.
Words lost, this me forever gone,
naked and free as the lilies we crushed
in Eden where we belong.
