Correspondent Saw

I squinted in abject disbelief. Not only had my wife's very expensive gray lens not eliminated the noisome energy globules. The polarizer had brought out what appeared to be WRITING--VERY LARGE WRITING--on the face of the massive cliff!!!

I squinted and squinted but could not decipher the words on my tiny 1" LED screen. I yelled to my wife. She came and squinted but couldn't make out what was what either.

After a brief discussion, we abandoned our trip and drove non-stop to our home outside of Peoria, Ill., where we were able to connect the camera to our Pentium 90 and download the picture.

What we saw when it appeared on our computer screen wasn't, alas, much clearer that what I had seen on that fateful day when I took the shot. But by carefully using a shareware graphics program I have, I was able to extract each of the apparent inscriptions and enlarge... and decode them.
