Memo from
"ObL"?
A puzzling memo appeared in our email this morning, allegedly from one "ObL" to
his global operatives. We're frankly skeptical but
leave it to our readers to decide about its authenticity.

Beethoven and
Barnett Newman

thinkingthe
unthinkable
In 1965 Herman Kahn (with Henry Kissinger and Werner von Braun, the inspiration for Dr.
Strangelove) thought the unthinkable and gave the world his "escalation ladder":
44 steps to all-out nuclear war. We reproduce it
here without comment.

H O P E . . .
Grieving, confused, exhausted, we took a digital camera into the city and photographed
flowers. Here's a little slideshow with a
bit of Scott Joplin. Peace. Peace. Peace.

We see imperfections, disorder,
and evil all about us. But before our eyes is a vision of perfection, order, and goodness.
There is evil enough to break the beart, enough good to exalt the soul.
--Gates of
Repentance.

"Cui
Bono?"
Sylvia Sikeston plays detective, asks the standard first post- crime question, "Who benefits?", and not only fingers a guy but
puts him Number 1 on her list of September 11 suspects.

How Stupid
Can You Get
Dangerous but basically just plain dumb. That's how Douglas Milburn sees the
suicidal attackers who think America is just buildings, or even people. America is an idea, he reminds us, that will be very hard to stamp out.

On Leadership
Doc Cuddy examines the crisis behavior of our expensive D.C. pols, gives a lot of "F's" and 2 surprising
"A-pluses."

Lascaux Redux:
The Origin of Sub-species
Reppy Toppenish graces our pages once again, this time with a heavy, heavy thinkpiece about (though he
never mentions it) what's wrong with AM radio these days.

La Campanella
Most midi files alas sound like a cyber-music box. With care and creativity, a midi file
can be much more, as in Bernd Krueger's rendering of Liszt's finger- and ear-bending bon-bon, La
Campanella.

OVERLOOKED VIDEO GAME STAT
Before 1993 the annual rate of juvenile homicide was rising sharply. Since 1993 it has
dropped steadily and is now down 60%. 1993 saw the debut of 1) Mortal Kombat and 2) Doom.

Homeward Bound

What Changed?
Nothing, says Cassandra, our own Ms. Doom- and- Gloom,
because the world was as dangerous before 9-11 as it is now. What to do? Actually, she has a pretty good suggestion...

The Guns of September
Following 9-11, words have been easy and, for Anther Varick Ticklaw, frighteningly
familiar. Surrounded by examples of leaders who seem to have forgotten the past, we seem, he says, doomed to repeat history.

Dropping
bombs is a very profitable business. Whenever America policy seems inscrutable, remember
the military-industrial complex.
--Gore Vidal.

We, ALL the People of Earth
Harriet Lobdell sees the bad in the events of September 11 and then sets out to find future goodness arising from the same
events.

9-11-01
Against the Darkness
Selected pages from Magellan's Log-- words, images, music. Strong medicine for your heart in times of Chaos and Old
Night.

I have a great regard for the
truth, so much so that I only produce it upon special occasions.
--W. Graham Robinson (1866-1948.
