Do words here fail her? Usually when the flow breaks, she uses a space to start the story again elsewhere, a space or a bullet or, conventionally, a new numbered chapter begins. In Nuns and Soldiers several times we encounter what seems to be almost a hand-drawn symbol, which looks like this:

Knowing that she wrote the novels out by hand, and that she allowed no editing, we must conclude that she drew this symbol in the manuscript. It occurs mysteriously only in this book.
