While I the quotidian reader eagerly turn pages looking forward to the next Murdoch comic scene, I the persnickety critic suspect that Murdoch the Olympian observer would almost daily double over with laughter upon re-reading that days work. What I, good conditioned citizen of world culture that I am, take to be thoughtful, profound judgments, hints, and aperçus, Murdoch probably more often than not saw as side-splitting humor. Comedy too is in the eye of the beholder, a fact that we, the long-suffering beholden, have some difficulty in remembering. The future may be more successful in viewing the oeuvre as the body of comic writing that it surely is.
