SNAKE IN THE GRASS*

snakeingrass.gif (5457 bytes)Fiddling while Rome burns, the Magellan's Log staff has come up with a new kind of word puzzle: Snake in the Grass. Sort of a word search deluxe.

Here's how it works. There are two steps.

1. Below are 7 rows of letters. In each row, your job is to find the name of a color. The letters forming the name of the color are in the correct sequence. They just have a few random letters inserted among them to throw you off. Circle the letters as you find the names.

For example, take this row of letters. Can you see the name of a color in it? We'll give you a hint. The word has four letters.

upesracngtabreut

The word is "ecru":

upesracngtabreut

2. When you've found all seven colors, it's time to find the snake in the grass. Reading down, starting with one of the circled letters, you can make another word. Again, the letters are in correct sequence. They are also adjacent to each other. For example, if you start with the "F" in line one, then, reading down, the second letter (from line 2) must either be "I" or "S" or "W", since those are the letters immediately below the "F" in line one.

Snake in the Grass Clue (for the 8th word):
It's where these colors, and a lot more, live.

If you need more help, scroll down and you'll find a list of color names which includes the 7 used in the puzzle.

*Continuing our tradition of appealing to ALL Internet users, no matter how low your bandwidth, we eschew online interactive stuff. Which means to do this puzzle properly, you have to pretend you're back in the 20th century (remember the "20th century"?) and actually p-r-i-n-t the puzzle on paper (remember "paper").
