ESL 25:
An ESL Fairy Tale
Here
is a little ESL fairy tale. It has a happy ending, but you have to work to read it,
because it is written in code.
It is called a substitution code. Each letter of the alphabet has been
replaced with a picture of an animal. For example, maybe all the "a's" have been
replaced by the picture of a dog, and all the "b's" have been replaced by the
picture of a horse, and so on.
You have to figure out the correct letter for each picture, and then you
will be able to read the story.
1. There are no punctuation marks in the code. Each group of pictures is a
sentence. There is a space between sentences.
2. Capital letters do not use the same pictures as small letters. For
example, a small "a" may be represented by a fish, but a capital "A"
might be a cat.
3. Hint: The most frequent letter in English is "e".
4. BIG Hint: Most English fairy tales begin with the same four words. If
you can find out what those first four words are, you will have an easy start to solve the
puzzle and read this fairy tale.
5. Print this page on your printer, and have fun!
