| Henricks was the first translator to use the
so-called Ma-wang-tui texts, discovered in 1973, in a tomb dating from 186 BCE. These
texts are the oldest known version of the Tao Te Ching and are notable primarily because
they have the two sections of the work in reverse order. In this oldest version, Chapters
38-81, dealing with "Teh" come first, followed by Chapters 1-37, dealing with
"Tao". Thus, Henricks calls his translation "Te Tao Ching." Henricks is especially useful in that he provides two translations, one which is "literary," and the other which is "literal." The Henricks translation has also now replaced the old Lin
