Tom Richmond's work as a cinematographer has ranged from prize-winning music videos (with
Pearl Jam, among many others) to thoughtful, off-beat, memorable movies. His credits as
Director of Photography include: Stand and Deliver, A Midnight Clear, Waking the Dead,
Mother Night.
Wherever he goes, his trusty Nikon goes with
him, and his favorite 28 millimeter lens. His still photographs have the same slightly
unsettling quality of evanescent beauty that one sees in his movies. Moments are captured
which seem mysteriously filled with implied meaning or significance: something (gone now?
invisible) lingers in the image, seducing our puzzled attention. Whimsy, irony, elegy,
celebration... combining and re-combining.
Some photographers in their pictures make
periods. Others do commas, or ellipses, or exclamation marks. Tom Richmond does gently
probing question marks.
He recently returned for a few days in
Houston, his adoptive home city, which he has photographed many times over the years. This
trip produced a one-off photobook, called "Serious." We are pleased to share the
work with our readers.
Note: the original pictures are 3 x 5, so the
works you see here are considerably reduced in size.
To reproduce the effect of looking at the
photobook, each screen below contains the two pictures on each pair of facing pages.
You can view the pictures in sequence by using
the "next" link at the bottom of each page. Or you can use the following
contents list to skip about.
