Beauty by the Dozen

You may have noticed that "beauty" is one of the words we carry above the Magellan's Log banner. In every issue we stop the words for a while, and do a graphics feature.

We do this partly because we like to, but we also have a hidden agenda. If we wanted to make a new word, we could call it our "chronocentric" agenda.

It works like this: A new millennium is sort of a blank slate, a tabula rasa, a thousand years stretching out before us to be filled with human activity. Let's just say that with our little contributions of beauty in issue each we're trying to tip the millennial balance in a more pleasing direction.

So, to honor our first year of publication, we thought it would be good to have a small retrospective celebration of beauty. We polled the staff. What, we asked, are the most beautiful images we've published during Year One?

Below, gathered in one place, are the top twelve choices.* That they are a strange mix should not surprise you if you've been reading Magellan's Log long.

Enjoy:

Bosch: Garden of Earthly Delights (center panel, painting).
Velazquez: Las Meninas [The Maids-in-waiting] (painting).
Hsiao Chao (painting).
Guilin (photograph).
Turner: Rain, Steam, and Speed (painting).
Earthrise (Apollo 11 photograph).
Dürer: Horsemen of the Apoalypse (woodcut).
1959 Cadillac (detail, photograph).
M31 Galaxy (photograph).
Praxiteles. Crouching Aphrodite (sculpture).
Clouds (photograph).
Ox-herding Picture No. 10 (ink-drawing).
