East of the Mississippi, America is looking more
like Europe every year. Every lane is now named, complete with signpost and, often, street
numbers. You can hardly pass a crossroad without a convenience store. Wilderness can be
found, but you have to seek it out. People are everywhere.

The police presence, on and off the Interstates, is now
formidable: half a dozen or more cruisers per day. Is this a trickle-down effect of the
