Magazines have some good issues, a lot of so-so issues, and occasionally a really bad
issue. Of course, to hear them talk, you'd never know it. You'll never read in one week's Newsweek
about what a lousy issue came out the previous week.
Not so here. Starting with Magellan's Log
6, I began doing a column called "Log Log," which was a kind of
report card on the stories in each issue. Obviously, we wouldn't publish a piece if we
thought it was not good stuff. Equally obviously: there's good stuff, better stuff, and
outstanding stuff. The idea behind Log Log was to share with the reader my own
assessment of each issue as it moved from concept to reality.
Then it occurred to me that it might also be
helpful to the reader, given how large Magellan's Log has become, to have a
nutshell rating for each completed issue.
So: the editor's report card for Magellan's
Log. Certainly we hope you'll find enough of interest that you'll look at every
issue, but in a less than ideal world, few of us have time to do everything we might want
to. Maybe the following grade report will help you find items of special worth.
(For the editor's more detailed critques, see
the Log Log in many issues, where grades are given on each article.)
Issue # |
Comments |
Grade |
| Magellan's
Log 1 |
A pretty good realization of our design goals
for page 1: eclectic, busy, friendly. We're still tweaking this page. |
B- |
| Magellan's
Log 2 |
Our weakest issue. Some light stuff from Page
1 was moved here and was never balanced by enough good heavy pieces. |
C- |
| Magellan's
Log 3 |
We began to hit our stride with #3, getting
closer to the mix we want (see the red words above the ML banner for a clue). |
C+ |
| Magellan's
Log 4 |
Getting closer... |
B- |
| Magellan's
Log 5 |
No comments. Judge for yourself. |
B- |
| Magellan's
Log 6 |
Good humor writing is so hard to find.
"Kulturkampf" lifts this page above the previous issues. |
B+ |
| Magellan's
Log 7 |
|
B |
| Magellan's
Log 8 |
Though with no humor other than the usual
jokes and cartoons, it's otherwise a rich combination of words, pictures, and music. |
B+ |
| Magellan's
Log 9 |
Maybe the closest we've come to our collective
vision of Magellan's Log: humor, sharp satire, art, several good thought pieces.
The only element there's not quite enough of is music. |
B++ |
| Magellan's
Log 10 |
Best overall mix (ideas, art, music, satire,
etc.) yet. Good job, guys. |
A- |
| Magellan's
Log 11 |
Another good mix. We seem to be hitting just
the half-serious and half-not-serious stride we're aiming for. |
A- |
| Magellan's
Log 12 |
Some really good stuff, but some that's weaker
than we'd have hoped... |
B |
| Magellan's
Log 13 |
One of the most varied issues we've done,
which is great. Some solid think pieces, but a little short of humor. |
A- |
| Magellan's
Log 14 |
One of the most unusual issues yet.
"Petrophilia"??!! Microsoft and the Texas Railroad Commission?? |
A- |
| Magellan's
Log 15 |
The best one yet. Some discoveries, some
vitriolic humor, and a couple of pretty serious think-pieces. |
A |
| Magellan's
Log 16 |
One of the strangest mixes we've published,
from thimbles (!) to tattoos to galactic report cards to a great album of city
photographs. |
B |
| Magellan's
Log 17 |
Some beautiful stuff, some thought- provoking
stuff, but not enough humor. |
C+ |
| Magellan's
Log 18 |
Special Issue. |
A |
| Magellan's
Log 19 |
A wildly diverse issue, from a heavy does of
sex/humor to an equally heavy dose of Really Big Ideas. What a mix. |
B- |
| Magellan's
Log 20 |
Our first (and, I trust, only) fiction issue.
See my comments in Log Log 20 for details.
Obviously I was not a happy editor this time out. |
C-/D+- |
| Magellan's
Log 21 |
Good to see us really hitting our diversified
stride again after our detour into fiction in No. 20. |
A- |
| Magellan's
Log 22 |
Some of the best stuff we've done... along
with some of the wurst... |
