The Spread of Consciousness
Where's the flaw in this two-step line of thought?
1. We have no idea how, why, when we achieved this state we call
consciousness.
2. Is it not thus reasonable to assume that at any moment a mind--even one
(perhaps especially one) in the most humble of circumstances--may make the next noumenal
leap? A leap as incomprehensible to us as ours was to Cro-Magnon.
2. Is it not reasonable to expect that other species may well one day grow
into a similar state? Are perhaps at this very moment waking up? Porpoises, chimpanzees?
Or, lo, the wile coyote now spreading
its domain so cleverly and efficiently across the most paved continent in the world.
