He is driving the team down the road to Tehuacana. it is a fine
spring day. For some reason there are large sand dunes on
each side of the road. Here and there the road detours around a ravine-like excavation.
Lafe worries about getting through. He knows his father is sitting behind him, though he
doesn't look around. He gets more and more worried about getting through. The wagon is
slowly sinking in the sand. He feels his father's hand on his shoulder, His father doesn't
speak but Lafe knows his father is telling his it's all right, it'll be all right. Lafe
turns, cries, "Daddy!" wanting to embrace him. There is no one there.
