TEHUACANA 29

Although they had only one bag for the four of them, the porter insisted on carrying it to their seat on the train. They were going to Houston to the Cullen Plantation. Lafe didn't understand. He knew only that Cullen was someone very rich and that his father had gotten a job there to tide them over the drought. Mrs. Cullen had something to do with Mexia.

Lafe had never been more than five miles from home before. As the train hurtled through the fields and forests of South Texas Lafe was incredulous at the size of the world. it went on and on. He felt dizzy with excitement and the possibility that his life might be something more than that of caretaker to forty bleak acres in Tehuacana, Texas.

"Daddy?"

"What is it?"

"I’m happy."

His father said nothing.
